My Dad

This month my dad celebrated his 75th birthday. Well, I celebrated it. He says that he doesn’t celebrate birthdays anymore.

Store bought again. I really should learn to bake a cake. I’m sure I can do it. One of these days…

My grandma baked cakes. When I was a kid I remember her bringing us chocolate cakes with coconut sprinkled on top. She needed no special reason except that she loved us.

I overfed my parents this time. I can’t get used to them eating like birds, and for some reason I cook for an army. I’ve never had an army, but I’m prepared for one.

So after being unable to finish his pea soup my dad struggled through his desert. I couldn’t finish my soup either. Peas stick to the ribs! I told him he didn’t have to finish his cake. I informed him that I could put it in a container to take home, but, nope, he soldiered through it. (lol)

As he read the poem below he had to go back to the top and re-read it. When asked if he could read my writing. He said, “Yep, I can read it.”

I don’t know about this poem. Either it doesn’t flow quite right, or maybe I just didn’t write it out right for my dad (I was rushing a bit when I did), but he said, “Okay, yep. I’ve got it now.”(lol) Then I recieved a hug.  โค

My Dad

A father who loves your mother

helps to keep your world at peace

It’s a an honorable and a lovely thing

    when gentleness is a legacy.

And even when you’ve left the nest

the choices he makes matter no less

It’s a comforting and a wonderful thing

when beautiful things remain the same.

“Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.”

Colossians 3:19

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Ephesians 5:25-33

  1. Hi Tina, for some reason I always cook like I am cooking for an army also. It’s the fear of not having enough, I guess. Anyway, it is nice to have another meal ready and waiting in the fridge. Your Dad’s poem is heartfelt how wonderful that your father is loving, honorable, and gentle.

    1. Thanks. I very rarely use the microwave. I only use it to heat up leftovers. And I have never used the popcorn setting. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I really didn’t even know that setting existed until you mentioned it on your blog. Then I had to check it out. Lol. But I still haven’t use it. Oven, stove top or slow cooker are my prefered methods of cooking. โ˜บ

      1. You are wise not to use the microwave. It has been proven to be unhealthy even for warming things up. My favorite way to cook is my 3-tiered electric steamer. I cook almost everything in that except I do potatoes and casseroles in the oven. But the steamer is my favorite because it has a timer, stays on warm if I don’t get to it right away, then will automatically turn itself off after a certain amount of time. I often put something on to cook and get involved in something else, forgetting that I’m cooking. So, no burned food or pans this way.:-)

  2. I usually cook too much when I have company, especially at Christmas. I have enough for several meals from that one meal. I usually get it right for just myself, except for yesterday. I could only eat half of what I cooked, but was happy not to have to cook today. Just warmed the leftovers in the steamer and ate.

  3. Happy Birthday to your dad, Tina! The photos are great (with your little ๐Ÿ trademark) – your mum and dad are a beautiful couple. You look so much like your mum!
    Your poem is wonderful. ๐Ÿ’x

  4. Agghhh, don’t show me pictures of cake! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I like the poem, it’s really good. I don’t want to sound weird but I think your dad looks like he could be a movie star. ๐Ÿ˜†

      1. Okay! ๐Ÿ˜† What’s more, he looks like an actor I’ve SEEN before, but I can’t pinpoint exactly who. Zachary Quinto, maybe? Yeh, that might be it.

  5. Happy Birthday to your Dad! Heโ€™s my momโ€™s age, and her birthday was 3/14. The cake looks really good. I usually have the storeโ€™s cakes too. I did bake a banana bread recently. It came out good. I love the pics!
