The Sound of Rain

Maybe you’ve heard it too often 

The sound of falling rain 

Perhaps it’s left you longing 

For sunshine once again.

But oh the sound of falling rain 

To me it’s still a sweet refrain

Maybe you’re caught in the deluge

And it’s a struggle to hear the sweet song

I understand the pain there 

When you’ve been standing in its wake so long 

But oh the sound of falling rain 

I still believe it’s a sweet refrain  

I too have longed for a different tune

When the rain gives way to a murky slough

I understand the desperate need

The tears, the fears and the in-betweens

But oh the sound of falling rain

I’m convinced it’s a mercy despite the pain

If all we knew was the warmth of the sun 

We’d never know the arms of God’s love

It may seem backwards 

Yet, I believe that it’s true 

For mercy comes running

When the sky isn’t blue. 

So oh the sound of falling rain

May we learn to hear it’s sweet refrain.

When life has been difficult those who follow Jesus must keep their eyes on the long range forecast. We rejoice that the testing of our faith (our present suffering )is not only productive, but what’s ahead will far exceed anything behind. Rain makes a great metaphor for suffering. It softens hard ground, but look at what that prepared soil produces. God is wise.

“For I consider [from the standpoint of faith] that the sufferings of the present life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us!”

Romans 8:18

“While Jesus lived on earth, He prayed to God and asked God for help. He prayed with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and His prayer was heard because he trusted God. Even though Jesus was the Son of God, He learned obedience by what He suffered. And because His obedience was perfect, He was able to give eternal salvation to all who obey Him. In this way God made Jesus a high priest, a priest like Melchizedek.” 

Hebrews 5:7-10 (NCV)

“The “object” here is, to show how well suited the Lord Jesus was to be a Saviour for mankind; and the argument is, that he has set us an example, and has shown that the most perfect obedience may be manifested in the deepest sorrows of the body and the soul. Hence, learn that one of the objects of affliction is to lead us “to obey God.” In prosperity we forget it. We become self-confident and rebellious. “Then” God lays his hand upon us; breaks up our plans; crushes our hopes; takes away our health, and teaches us that we “must” be submissive to his will. Some of the most valuable lessons of obedience are learned in the furnace of affliction; and many of the most submissive children of the Almighty have been made so as the result of protracted woes.”

  2. That’s so good. It really is so good. I keep seeing that book in the front window of that bookshop in Switzerland.😀
    Just can’t get the line out of my head. – if all we knew was the warmth of the sun.😁
    Let’s see if it brings rain, it’s blue sky and 80F here.

    1. 😁 I was wondering when you would comment that again. I may have a response to this one of these days. The brain has been churning. Oddly the weather app is showing cloudy, but the sun is shining, it’s 68F. It was very muggy the other day. No, my poem did not bring rain, but I think that’s because my second post today will reveal the sun. 😄

  4. Hi Tina, Yes, the calming cleansing rain that softens the ground and makes the flowers bloom. It also is God’s mercy and renewal for us during the rainy days of life. 🌼🌺🌈

    1. I hope that’s true because I’m not feeling like I know Him more. I’m feeling like I know just as much about Him now as I did when things weren’t so tough. I feel stuck in my growth.

  7. I like how you made rain into a positive, cleansing thing instead of a dreary, gray thing. I’m still trying to decide if I like rain. I think I don’t like it so much as I like the IDEA of it. 😆

    1. Thanks Spacegirl! Yes, rain isn’t always so easy to appreciate. It’s what it produces that makes it a positive thing, and when it rains on a muggy overcast summer day it’s quite refreshing. I do enjoy the sound of rain though.
