I love it when an artist shares the story behind a song. How about you? This song really spoke to me the first time I listened to it, but it spoke even more when I read the story behind it.

Trevor McNevan’s answer to the story behind writing this song:

“This one still gives me chills. It was the first song written for the new record. I had been trying to hone in on what this record should sound like, what it should feel like, etc, and I started to get frustrated. I was shooting in 10 different directions and wasn’t happy with my shots. I remember going out to the deck, pulling my hair out, and looking up at the stars, and just crying out to God, wondering why I was feeling this way, why the uncertainty in direction. 

I’m blessed to not be very acquainted with “writer’s block;” [inspiration] seems to never stop coming. I give God all the glory for that and am grateful, although it’s sometimes very annoying when I can’t shut it off! I remember hearing God say, “Go back,” so I went inside and pulled out our first two independent albums. 

I remember listening to “Small Town” and “Lift It” again for the first time in years, and was standing there in tears. God’s anointing was still on those songs. I needed to get my head out of “what makes a great song,” and just write from the heart. I shared this with my wife, and she said, “Why don’t you write about this? About how the Holy Spirit speaks to you and how you feel right now.” It hit me like a brick. So I went upstairs and sat down with an acoustic for the rest of the night and wrote this song. My thoughts:

I can relate to this so much. Sometimes the Holy Spirit will flow through you like a River, then other seasons He holds back. At times perhaps we also stifle His voice.

Or simply ask Him not to speak. *blush* 🤣😂😂

I remember this one time when Andrew and I went to the movie theatre and I prayed, Lord, please don’t give me anything during this movie. I really want to enjoy it. I need a break. Please speak to Andrew instead. He did, and Andrew received something from the Holy Spirit instead. In my defense it was an exhausting season. I’m sure God understood. He loves me. But I do prefer it when He gives me the words. That’s when I feel the closest to Him. ❤

The Gift of the Holy Spirit

Peter answered them, “All of you must turn to God and change the way you think and act, and each of you must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins will be forgiven. Then you will receive the Holy Spirit as a gift.

It was equivalent to saying that they should publicly and professedly embrace Jesus Christ as their Saviour. The gospel requires such a profession, and no one is at liberty to withhold it. A similar declaration is to be made to all who are inquiring the way to life………… If people are unwilling to profess religion, they have none. If they will not, in the proper way, show that they are truly attached to Christ, it is proof that they have no such attachment. Baptism is the application of water, as expressive of the need of purification, and as emblematic of the influences from God that can alone cleanse the soul. It is also a form of dedication to the service of God.

The word for “gift” (dôrea) is generic, and differs from the more specific “gift” (charisma) of 1Corinthians 12:4; 1Corinthians 12:9; 1Corinthians 12:28. The Apostle does not necessarily promise startling and marvellous powers, but in some way they should all feel that a new Spirit was working in them, and that that Spirit was from God.

  2. Wow, Tina, the song is so heartfelt, and Holy Spirit lead. We do need to stop and listen for the Holy Spirit’s promptings rather than trying to figure everything out on our own. Thanks for sharing! 💗💐✨🌺😊

    1. Thanks Jeanne. Yes, I need this reminder a lot. My peace is often disturbed because I think I have to figure it all out when I should rest and let the Holy Spirit prompt me. Have a peaceful weekend. 🙂💗🌺🌱🌻

    1. I’m glad it made you smile, Marisa. It’s funny, sometimes I struggle with prayer because I over complicated it. I forget were not just speaking to a father and a teacher we’re also speaking to a friend. I don’t think I even thought of that moment as prayer, but you’re right. It was prayer. Prayer is our conversation with God. It includes our requests, our praise and our thanks. I so hope I remembered to thank Him and praise Him. He is worthy of our praise. ❤

      1. Amen! Yes, I can understand that struggle. I’ve had it, too. I think, though, that my life, especially in recent years, has shown me that my prayers are not meant to be a complicated thing, but, rather, as you said, conversation with God. When I approach it as an ongoing exchange throughout my day, it really serves as an anchor for me.

      2. Yes, an ongoing thing throughout the day. That’s exactly how our conversation with Him should be. We talk to the people we love the most throughout our day why wouldn’t we talk to God in the same way? There is no one we should love and trust more than God Himself. ❤

      Okay, so we all stifle God’s voice some days is what I think you’re referring to. Yes, it’s very human.

      So what you’re saying then is that you should have tried to stifle Alvin and the Chipminks. 🤣😂🤣😂 Okay I’ve got it now. I take it that isn’t your favorite movie. 😆😆😆

  7. Wow what an amazing post. What a gift we have in the Holy Spirit to speak to us, if we just take the time to listen. I feel in my own life when I do not hear from Him, it is my own fault for adding too much noise that drowns Him out. I love the piece in the movie theater too! How amazing that God spoke to Andrew when you asked Him to! Thanks for this! Very encouraging! Blessings my friend 💕🌸🌺
