Tempted

By false advertisements

Fleeing

Our course of defense

Embracing

I’m lost here without you

Accepting

That Your way is best.

Resisting

A world of distractions

Rejoicing

In all that is right

Remembering

The gift that was given

Learning

To persevere through the night.

Surrender

Is still the best option

Trusting

You’ll guide as we go

Believing

You still go before me

Knowing

You call me Your own.

Praying

With fervent resolution

Waiting

For strength You’ll bestow

Assured

I won’t be disappointed

Thankful

You’re leading me home.

Note on the wording:

I chose the words “false advertisements” figuratively, not literally, as in— anything that draws the eye away from God and the truth with misleading and deceptive claims, such as promises of monetary prosperity, or inspirational, but not completely true or clear, quotes and memes. Anything that promises you peace, joy, security or fullfillment apart from God.

You could always read it literally if over spending money in an indulgent way happens to be a temptation for you.

Often we are tempted by a desire to fill a void, or a hole, in our hearts with things that promise to sustain us and give us life, but these things don’t really have that kind of staying power. When we are tempted we are told to flee. However, this isn’t always possible in every situation, therefore God advises us to resist the devil. To do so we need God’s help. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:40-43)

God gives us what we ask for in Jesus name

“Lord, be kind to us. We have waited for your help. Give us strength every morning. Save us when we are in trouble.”

Isaiah 33:2

“Those who by faith humbly wait for God, shall find Him gracious to them; as the day, so let the strength be. If God leaves us to ourselves any morning, we are undone; we must every morning commit ourselves to Him, and go forth in His strength to do the work of the day.”

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

Luke 9:23

Don’t Be Distracted or Diverted

“You yourselves are a case study of what He does. At one time you all had your backs turned to God, thinking rebellious thoughts of Him, giving Him trouble every chance you got. But now, by giving Himself completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God’s side and put your lives together, whole and holy in His presence. You don’t walk away from a gift like that! You stay grounded and steady in that bond of trust, constantly tuned in to the Message, careful not to be distracted or diverted. There is no other Message—just this one. Every creature under heaven gets this same Message. I, Paul, am a messenger of this Message.”

Colossians 1:21-23

  1. This post really spoke to me. I can definitely relate to the “false advertisements.” I feel we reach for too many other things, in hopes that they will satisfy us. Truly we need to get back to basics and find our true fulfillment in Jesus alone. Thank you for this powerful post! 🦋

  2. Tina, Wow! This poem is a wonderful synopsis of what we know and trust in and what we need to embrace; daily. Your poem is concise, well thought out, and full of hope. 💖💐🐝🌺

  3. Beautiful words Tina. When tempted we tend to flee but resisting the devil and drawing near to God makes him flee. Was reminded of James 4:7 “ submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you “

    1. Yes, God is our armor. God is our defense. Knowing Scripture (knowing God) and knowing the schemes of the devil will guide and protect us and cause the devil to lose ground, lose grip, lose the battle… thus, He must retreat so to speak. He can’t win a battle against God.
