Our Eyes Adjust

This is a nap room revelation. It’s been far too long since I’ve utilised reflection and awakened my spirit.

One significant thing my Early Childhood Education training has instilled in me is the importance of reflective practice. My place of work is also big on this practice. However, this isn’t new to me. I’ve been reflecting for years through my walk with God and my writing.

Reflection shines a light on what’s important and brings focus to things we might otherwise miss or ignore.

As reflecting in the nap room can keep me awake in those still dark moments, reflecting on God through dark and difficult times can keep us spiritually awake.

When we enter a dark place, or space, we can’t see anything clearly. Everything is black. I need the light of my phone to avoid stumbling or stepping on one of the children asleep on their mats.

But then as we sit in the dark for a time our eyes begin to adjust….

We may be able to make out shapes, but so much is still shrouded in darkness. We’re blind to what’s truly in front of us.

We need light to shine in those dark corners.

As I sat in that dark nap room I reflected that without a source of light my eyes wouldn’t have picked up the shapes in the room. I would be in total darkness. However, just enough light slipped in under the door, allowing my eyes to adjust. I could see enough until I stepped out into the bright light as I exited the nap room.

Our eyes adjust in and to the dark.

When we stray from Jesus our eyes adjust in another sense. We become accustomed to the dark and develope blind spots. As Casting Crowns put it. “It’s a slow fade…”

Alternatively, when life gives us dark times our eyes can adjust in the dark by following the light of Jesus that creeps in under the door.

Whether we’ve closed it ourselves, or trials have closed that door on us, Jesus is our source of light. He can guide us out of the dark and into His presence. His presence reveals all because He is the light of the world. It’s Jesus’ example that has shone a light not only on who our God and Saviour is but also on who we should be and how we should live our lives.

Jesus is our Source of Light

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.

John 12:46

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.

John 1:9 – 10

The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.

Psalm 119:130 ESV

Lord, you give light to my lamp. My God brightens the darkness around me.

Psalm 18:28 (New Century Version)

  1. Our eyes adjust in and to the dark – this is so very true when we drift from the Lord. What would normally make us sensitive will eventually only leave us with a spiritual numbness.

  2. I’m so thankful for The Light. The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it! – John 1:5. That’s one of my favorites. I love the verses you shared as well. Such a comforting reminder in this post, Tina! 💕
