The Victory!

Today I had a fight with technology. It’s a fight I know well. We have a love hate relationship. Printers are so great when they print. When they are uncooperative, however, the hair pulling is inevitable. 

I was going to get my bloodwork done today. To be fair, I should have printed my lab requisition earlier. Yesterday probably would have been good. 

So I opened my email expecting smooth sailing. Open the document, hit print and walla… the document is magically sent to the printer 🖨 and you’re ready to go. Not so when you’re out of ink. Okay, no problem. Let’s just quickly change the cartridge. No big deal, right? Let’s take a look at the printer and see what needs changing. Black. Okay. There we go.

Next the printer questions me…

Did you change the black cartridge? 

Yes I did. Thank you for asking. How dare you question me. Can you print this document now? Nothing happens. 

Okay, so I probably just need to cancel that print and start a new print, right? Nothing happens. 

Okay so let’s take a closer look. Hmm… it still says I’m out of ink. Fine, let’s look at that ink again. 

Really it was more like….

Ughhhhhhhh, technology hates me. Why can’t I touch technology without it giving me a problem? 

Alright, let’s see. What? Now it’s showing me that two other cartridges are out of ink. Fine, let’s change those too. What? You aren’t going to question me? But I changed two cartridges! No, no, no. Don’t tell me that the ink is still registering as low! Technology! 

Lets think about this. What if I change the last cartridge as well?

Seriously!!!!?????? You’re still not going to question me? Look, I changed all of the cartridges now. 

Okay, so it was more like… 

Ughhhhhhhhhh… I’m never going to get to the lab today! Maybe I should pray about this. Okay Lord, I really need this printed. 

What am I going to do? Maybe I can trick it. Let’s clean the cartridges. Then it will see that the cartridges are clearly full and they have all been changed. Then it will agree that I’ve changed all of the cartridges. 

After the cartridges are cleaned I check the ink levels. Yes! I can’t believe that worked. Okay, let’s refresh that print. Still nothing… 

The laptop is still telling me that the ink is low. Next, I check my app to see if we’re going to make it to my lab appointment. I don’t think we are. I better just cancel it. 

What now? When all else fails do a reboot! Right! I can’t believe I remembered that. I never remember to do that. 

Finally the document starts to print while I’m rebooting. Just after I canceled my ‘save my spot in line’ at the lab. Guess we’ll try again tomorrow. 

Thank you Lord, that this document is printed! 👍 What should we do next? That’s one battle down. How many more to go?

  6. Haha I can imagine your experience with the printer. It can be annoying. My mum always says “what doesn’t speak (an object) cannot be wiser than me an human”. (It’s a Nigerian proverb). Sometimes I want to tell her to tell that to a computer when is bent on not doing what I want it to do. Anyway I am glad you saw victory at last 😆

  7. What I don’t understand is how technology seems to “know” when we are in a hurry. My lap top or printer rarely refuses to work on a lazy Saturday morning. It’s always when I’m pressed for time.

    In my morning class I have an assistant. She is 22 years old. If I can’t figure out a program, I look at her and say, “Hey young person.” She laughs and helps me.
